Meet Sue Spears (Board Member Since 2013)

June 17, 2024

Why do you serve on the board of the SMCF?

It is an honor to be the SMCF’s longest serving Board member, as I respect and value the mission of the SMCF to serve the Sierra Madre community at large. I love volunteering and being able to give back to our beloved community and, through the Sierra Madre Community Foundation, support local non-profit and civic organizations’ efforts to provide great activities, events, and programs to benefit our residents and community at large.

Where else do you volunteer?

I currently serve on the Mount Wilson Trail Race Committee as Publicity Chairperson and Race Day Logistics Chairperson. I am also the Treasurer of the Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery Association. I am also an active volunteer with Students Run LA, a program involving more than 3,000 middle and high school students in Los Angeles. Previously I served for almost 3 years as City Clerk after being appointed in 2018.

What’s your profession?

I currently work for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) serving 35 schools in Region West. LAUSD is the second largest school district in the United States.

What attracted you to Sierra Madre?

I moved to Sierra Madre to be with my husband, Bob Spears, who has lived in Sierra Madre since 1972. We love living here and volunteering in Sierra Madre.

How long have you lived in Sierra Madre?

Since 1982 – 42 years

What’s your favorite aspect of the town?

One of the things that makes Sierra Madre so special is its sense of neighborhood and community. It is great walking in Kersting Court and along Baldwin Ave. and Sierra Madre Blvd. and seeing your friends and neighbors on a regular basis. Also, the Sierra Madre businesses that I go to regularly know me and make me feel welcome.

What’s your favorite local restaurant and why?

I like all of the restaurants in Sierra Madre, depending on what I want to eat and whether it is for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, or treat.

What’s your favorite local store and why?

Taylor’s Ol’ Fashioned Market is my go to market because of the great meat department and fresh produce/vegetable section. I like that we have (in alphabetical order) Arnold’s Hardware, Baldwin Jewelers, Chase Bank, K-Petrol, Leonora Moss, Nobees Flowers, Pantorium, Pax Pharmacy, and the Sierra Madre Post Office.

Anything else to add?

One of the other things that makes Sierra Madre special is the volunteerism and mutual love of our small town and sense of community. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to live in Sierra Madre and serve my community, friends, and neighbors.
