2024 SMCF Awarded Grants

SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY FOUNDATION

$4,000

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation awarded a grant of $4,000 to the Sierra Madre LIbrary Foundation "SMLF".  The SMLF to aid in their fundraising campaign to raise sufficient funds to fully furnish and equip the library prior to its re-opening in early 2026.  SMLF will rely on its community-based board of directors and volunteers to develop and implement the fundraising campaign

MT. WILSON TRAIL RACE KIDS FUN RUN

The Mt. Wilson Trail Race Kids Fun Run received a grant of $1,500 to account for the Kids Fun Run T-shirt design art contest, t-shirts printed with the winning design, including the SMCF logo, and finishers ribbons awarded the youth who participate in the race.  It is expected that over 200 kids will be participate this year.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation was happy to aware a grant of 1,000 to the Sierra Madre Public Library to help support a Dinner with The Human Library program within their On  Book One City event.    The dinner will have up to 50 guests with 10 human “books” that will tell their story with the intent to have a better understanding of people from different life experiences to help create more inclusive and cohesive communities across cultural, religious, social and ethnic differences. 

SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE

The Playhouse received a grant of $5,000 tp o purchase and install a modern video monitoring system as part of our
venue revitalization.  The items include TV monitors, cameras, computer hardware. and miscellaneous cabling and equipment.

2023 SMCF Awarded Grants

CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY GREATER SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

The Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley (CSCSGV) was recently awarded $2,000 to relaunch their in-person “Wednesday Family Night”, which is comprised pf three free support groups and dinner for people impacted by cancer in Sierra Madre and the greater San Gabriel Valley.

SIERRA MADRE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - RAISED GARDEN BEDS 

$2,090

The SMCF was able to provde a grant of $2,090 to Sierra Madre Elementary School to support their new Farm to Table Program.  The funds will be used to purchase 10 raised garden beds to allow expansion for 24 classes to plant, grow, and harvest their own food.

SIERRA MADRE ROSE FLOAT ASSOCIATION

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation is happy to provide a grant of $4,320  to upgrade old lighting and plumbing in the SMRFA Float Barn.  This will greatly improve  safety and reduce long term maintenance.  

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

$1,500

The City of Sierra Madre received a grant of $1,00 for this year's Hallowing Happenings Event.  The grant will help defray the operational costs of this year's event which includes Downtown Trick or Treating, a parade, costume contest,  lighting,  and mobile restrooms.

SIERRA MADRE SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM - MOBLE COMMAND POST INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS.

The SMCF was able to provde a grant to the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Tea.  The grant will support modernizing their mobile command infrastructure for managing search and rescue operations.  SMSR increasingly relies on mobile data in the command post: satellite communications with field teams for areas with poor radio coverage, live personnel tracking, and search management mapping software.  All of these technologies help the team to effectively organize searches for lost hikers and ensure the safety of our rescue team volunteers.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - WALK THIS WAY ADVENTURE

The  Sierra Madre Public Library received $1,500 to replace replace the hardware components including the metal frames, sandwich boards, and plastic page covers which were originally donated in 2020.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - FAMILY SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

The  Sierra Madre Public Library received $1,400 for their Family Science Workshops program.  This consists of four summer weeks of 

CREATIVE ARTS GROUP - IMAGINART 2023-2024

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation awarded funds to the Creative Arts Group $1,825 to support this years ImaginArt Program.  The theme for Sierra Madre Middle School 5th graders is "Coral Seascapes.  This projects involves working with clay as well as discussion around the diversity of the natural world.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - BOOKMARK CONTEST

The Sierra Madre Public Library received a grant to help this year's 2023 Bookmark Contest.  The theme this year is "Wonderrs of Reading" and will focus on the discovery and enjoyment of reading.  The contest runs from March 6th to April 13th with the awards ceremony held on April 25th.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - MT. WILSON TRAIL RACE KIDS FUN RUN

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation awarded $1,400 for the City of Sierra Madre -MWTR Kids Fun Run.  The run will be held on May 27, 2023 corresponding wth the Mt. Wilson Trail Race.  The funds will be used to pay for a T-shirt Design Art Contest and T-shirt printed with the winning design.  The shirts will be distributed to all participants on race day

2022 SMCF Awarded Grants

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - OBOC

The  Sierra Madre Public Library received $1,000 for their One Book One City speaker series.  This year's February event features the book Flying Fee: My Victory over Fear to Become the First Latina Pilot on the US Aerobatci team by Cecilla Aragon.

SIERRA MADRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation awarded funds to the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce toward the purchase of a new artificial Holiday Tree.  The tree is placed and decorated in Kersting Court each year.  The old tree  was no lonager was unable to stay upright any longer. 

SIERRA MADRE ROSE FLOAT ASSOCIATION

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation was pleased to award a $1,400 grant to the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association.  The funds will be used to support the 2022-2023 Float by the purchase of new large and medium floral containers that will last a number of years.

SIERRA MADRE COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM

Sierra Madre CERT received a grant of $780 to assist with the completion of their long-term storage project which includes putting in interior insulation, painting the exterior, and installing a new roof.   All work is being done by volunteers.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The SM Public LIbrary received $550 from the Foundation to purchase a one-year movie license to return movie programming to the Library.  The movies are for the whole family to enjoy with youth program in the spring and summer. Movies from studios like Studios like Walt Disney Pictures, NBCUniversal, Lionsgate, Touchstone Pictures, DreamWorks, Sony Pictures, Paramount, can now be shown.

CREATIVE ARTS GROUP - IMAGINART 2022-2023

Thanks to another generous grant from Supervisor Kathryn Barger's office, the  Sierra Madre Community Foundation was able to award the  Creative Arts Group $1,950 to support the 2022-2023 ImaginArt Program for 5th Grade students from Sierra Madre Elementary School. This year, students will create “Cubist Self-Portraits,” in conjunction with a discussion of the history, visual-structures, and processes of self-representation. the Cubist Self-Portraits allow for creative interpretation of the self, encouraging each child to emphasize the elements of the face of their choice to tell their own unique story. The program culminates in May 2023, with the ImaginArt Exhibition at the Creative Arts Group.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

Thanks to a generous grant from Supervisor Kathryn Barger's office, a grant of $1,000 was given to the City to offset costs of once again hosting  Halloween Happenings with Downtown Trick or Treat, a parade from Baldwin to Memorial Park, and a Costume Contest. The Sierra Madre Communtiy Foundationa provided Funds of $1,000 will be to offset costs for  decorations for the Bandshell in Memorial Park, operational costs, insurance, and Alegria Ave. lighting and portable restrooms.

SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE - ADA COMPLIANT DOORS

Together along with  funds received from Supervisor Kathryn Barger's office, The Sierra Madre Community Foundation was able to award a $5,000 grant to The Sierra Madre Playhouse to aid in the effort to bring their building into ADA compliance.  This in part included installing two sets of ADA-compliant double doors at the entrance and one set of ADA-compliant solid core double doors between the alleyway and auditorium. 

SIERRA MADRE PIONEER CEMENTARY - BENCH REPLACEMENT

The Foundation provided $1,350 towards the replacement of  four benches that have deteriorated over time. The benches are used by people visiting their loved ones and those visiting the cemetery.

SIERRA MADRE POST OFFICE LANDSCAPING PROJECT

Sierra Madre Community Foundation awarded a grant of $1,200 to the Sierra Madre Post Office Landscaping Project. This project is to re-landscape, including the installation of a drip-irrigation system, to make it a showplace for drought-tolerant water-saving landscaping that everyone can enjoy. The goal is to improve the existing appearance and provide the community with a place where they can learn about some of the best options in native plants and saving water.

SIERRA MADRE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - SELF CARE-WELLNESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Sierra Madre  Elementary School received $500 for their Self-Care - Wellness Management Program.   This program is to encourage students and staff to participate in an art, essay, poster, or video contest to creatively express what they can do to promote mental health issues, specifically on the issues of self-care and wellness management. The purpose is to make self-care management a priority so that everyone can better handle stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. 

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - BOOKMARK CONTEST

The Foundation provided a grant of $300 to the  Sierra Madre Public Library for this years Bookmark Contents. The theme this year is “Where the Wild Sierra Madre Is”  which will focus on nature, wildlife, and the outdoors. This community-wide outreach program includes children in Grades K – 8 who attend school in Sierra Madre, live in Sierra Madre, or have a Sierra Madre Public Library card. The contest runs through March 24th and judging will be March 25th.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - SUMMER WALK THIS WAY

SMCF awarded $1,500  to support “Walk This Way Story Adventure” set up in Memorial Park.  This event highlights a new book each week and provides the community with a reading opportunity as they walk around Memorial Park, and runs from June 6 – July 30, 2022. 

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - FAMILY SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation is pleased to have been able to grant the Sierra Madre Public LIbrary with $1,500 to help fund six weeks of “Family Science Workshops” during the Summer of 2022 taught by local teacher, Danny Richey. 

SIERRA MADRE SEARCH & RESCUE

Sierra Madre Search & Rescue received a grant of $3,000 to support some of the costs needed to acquire  of a new rescue vehicle and associated rescue equipment to support the Team’s mission.  This new vehicle is needed as  one of the Team’s vehicles, a green Chevy Suburban known as “Sierra Madre 3” (SM3), has been retired

SIERRA MADRE ROSE FLOAT ASSOCIATION

The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association we a recent recipient of a SMCF grant of $1,000 that will help create a float that will be participate in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Parade.  This year's theme is "Dream, Believe, Achieve."

SIERRA MADRE CERT

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation award Sierra Madre CERT a grant of $1,500 to aid in the building of a storage facility for their protective and emergency equipment.

CREATIVE ARTS GROUP - OUTDOOR AREA IMPROVEMENTS

SMCF was happy to provide The Creative Arts Group with funding of $2,500 to help offset some of the costs necessary to continue to improve and preserve their outdoor educational area.  

SIERRA MADRE MIDDLE SCHOOL - TWO SETS OF NOVELS

Sierra Madre Middle School was awarded a grant of $400 to provide books for a 7th grade English class. The novels "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen and "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton will be purchased and read by the students.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

THE FLETCHER FUND - MT. WILSON TRAILHEAD GATE

The Fletcher Fund was  a recent recipient of a SMCF grant of $1,000 that will be used towards the installation of a new Mount Wilson Trailhead gate, sign, and wrought iron fencing. The gate has been designed by local architect and former Sierra Madre Firefighter, Karen Moran, to match the 1910 picture on the cover of John Robinson’s 2001 book, “Sierra Madre’s Old Mount Wilson Trail.”   The new gateway will become an iconic structure in Sierra Madre to complement Lizzie’s Trail Inn and the Richardson House Museum.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - WALK THIS WAY STORY ADVENTURE

SMCF awarded Sierra Madre Public Library a grant in the amount of $500 to fund the “Walk This Way Story Adventure” set up in Memorial Park.  The program highlights a new book each week and provides the community with a reading opportunity as they walk around Memorial Park. The grant allows funding for 10 weeks of the story adventure, from May 23 to July 31, 2021.

CREATIVE ARTS GROUP - IMAGINART PROGRAM

The Creative Arts Group was recently awarded a $1,900 grant for their annual ImginArt Program.  The grant money will be used to support the 2021-2022 the program for 3rd Grade students from Sierra Madre Elementary School. This year, students will create “Ceramic Witches/Warlocks” in conjunction with a discussion of the history, symbols, and community traditions surrounding Halloween. This topic was not offered last year due to the Pandemic. The project uses clay tools and two colors of clay so that students learn the fundamentals of ceramics. The witches will be glazed, fired, and returned to the students who will write a short story about their witch.

SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE - YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN

After over a year of being shuttered, the Sierra Madre Playhouse returns to live theater in Sierra Madre with “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”.  The musical will run for 14 performances plus 1 preview show outside at the amphitheater in Memorial Park from July 30 – August 29, 2021. The SMCF grant of $3,500 will help defray some of the production costs of this popular musical.

SIERRA MADRE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - eBOOKS

$926

SMCF awarded Sierra Madre Elementary School a grant in the amount of $926 to fund the purchase of 27 nonfiction eBooks aligned Common Core Standards.  This support more than doubled the collection development budget of the school library.  The grant facilitated the purchase of titles covering a range of subjects: art, earth science, ecology, history, math, social studies, and sports. In addition to eBooks, the library also received durable, hardcover print editions of each title. Free and equitable access to these books supports students and faculty in both in-person and distance learning environments. Sierra Madre Elementary serves 629 students from Kindergarten to 5th Grade.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 100 EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

Sierra Madre Boy Scout Troop 110 was awarded $500 to support a Sierra Madre student’s Eagle Scout project to revitalize the Sierra Vista Park Basketball Court in 2021.

SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE - SMP TEEN COUNCIL

The SM Playhouse was awarded $2,500 for its relaunching the SMP Teen Council, which supports young people with a shared love of theater and guides them on their journeys as patrons, artists, and administrators. It is open to local students in Grades 6 – 12, with an emphasis on recruiting students from Sierra Madre MS, Pasadena HS, Bethany School, St. Rita School, The Gooden School, and Alverno Heights Academy.  All activities are offered free of charge.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

The City of Sierra Madre was awarded $500 to support this year’s Halloween Happenings. Activities included hiding 100-2,000 painted eggs stuffed with candy and 5 tickets supporting local businesses every day all over Sierra Madre, as well as Adult Virtual Costume Contest.

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation, in coordination with the City of Sierra Madre, was able to provide $1,500 to help local families in need during these challenging times.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - SENIOR MEAL PROGRAM

The City has partnered with the Mater Dolorosa facility during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide five meals per week for Sierra Madre seniors.  This  grant will help feed up to 50 seniors each week for three weeks

SIERRA MADRE THRIVES

$400

A grant to support efforts to assist families and local restaurants.  Sierra Madre Thrives supports businesses, provides a weekly free meal to those in need and organizes volunteers for meal delivery, grocery pick up and general daily services.  The $400 grant will support two weeks of activities, with $200 provided per week. 

CREATIVE ARTS GROUP - IMAGINART PROGRAM

ImaginArt Program for 5th  Grade students at Sierra Madre Elementary School. Entitled "Kinetic Sculpture," this 5th Grade project combines the curiosity and creativity of young children with their natural interest in science and movements.
